The College of St John the Evangelist within the University of Sydney has fostered the intellectual, spiritual, cultural and social pursuits of its student community since 1857. It is the oldest and most distinguished Australian University Catholic College.
The magnificent sandstone Gothic revival building was designed by William Wilkinson Wardell. The main Chapel, the Dining Hall and the Library are particularly grand and house some important paintings from the College's rich collection. The College is set in vast manicured grounds with playing fields for rugby, soccer, tennis and other recreational activities.
To commemorate the College's 150th Anniversary an impressive contemporary new building was erected, along with an external stone stairway to the Great Hall, and a covered walkway parallel to the Rector's corridor. The Hintze building, the Wardell Stairs, Blackett Cloister and the Quadrangle are the new structures and spaces within the College. These structures are in keeping with the spirit and intent of the pre-existing architectural style. The new Hintze Building enabled the College to provide additional student accommodation and consequently expanded the community considerably.
