The Women's College was the first residential college for women attending the University of Queensland. The College, it was officially opened for students in 1914 at Kangaroo Point, Brisbane to provide rural women the opportunity to undertake tertiary studies. The College relocated to its present site in St Lucia in 1958. A non-denominational College, governed by its own Council, it is situated on the corner of College and Thynne Roads within the beautiful grounds of the University of Queensland (see map PDF). During semester breaks the College utilises its facilities by hosting professional conference groups.
The Women’s College environment provides attractive, sparkling clean surroundings with modern furnished common rooms with flat screen TV’s tennis court and conference facilities for both female and male guests during the semester breaks. All rooms have internet access, telephones and desk fans. Campus facilities, including buses and city cat are within easy walking distance of the College.
At the Women’s College we have developed a fine reputation for our cuisine, providing healthy, nutritious meals including vegetarian, gluten free and low fat options. Our highly experienced chefs have created a range of choices of dishes from fresh daily fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry and seafood. This reputation for fine cuisine allows us to cater for residents and guests but also to various types of special events including weddings, cocktail receptions and conference dinners.
Our recently upgraded common rooms, offers guests areas where they can relax, read or study in comfort. The College also houses an air-conditioned library/computer room with a photocopier. There are four pianos (including a Grand) throughout the college with music practice rooms, and several tutorial rooms for guests to utilize. We also offer a fully lit tennis court for the more active.
Two bus terminals and the City Cat terminal are within easy walking distance from the college. Timetables as well as tourist information are all available at the college reception desk. A local shopping centre with mini mart, several restaurants, liquor store, newsagent and coffee shops are all also within 15 minutes walking distance.
